I thought I’d fire out a quick post letting you all know how the progress is going for the new CI Base design.

I hav to admit there has been a few times where I have thought, “what’s the point? most people use the CI forums” but when I looked at the stats for the domain it received 1000 unique hits in the first full month. That motivated me to carry on.

Ok, so over the past few days I’ve been trying to think of the best way to categorise the site and display it so that people can find code they’re looking for easily. Instead of using the more traditional way of categorising by type of code (.e.g library or plugin) I’m going to categorise by subject (e.g. user management). This has the advantage of users being able to browse for code by subject but brings the problem of trying to generate 8 or so categories which fit the different subjects. Tagging code by subject is much easier than by type as code is often a helper and a library. Which do you pick? Of course, I couldn’t use tags because users cannot really browse by tags. They’re more useful for searching.

The new homepage is a mix of Firefox addon library layout and CakePHP’s Bakery.

I found Firefox’s addon library gave a great way of viewing several important things at once. From categories to popular code to making the content section useful. However, I needed to include a news and tutorial feed so that’s where Bakery came in to play. I think Bakery is bit too much and because the tag cloud seems pretty random I didn’t want to include that. The main inspiration taken from Bakery is the way they separate the different sections. Mine isn’t as clear but the way they use the 1 over 2 column layout for the news and tutorials is great.

So, without any more explanation here’s a link to the new design. I’ll get round to posting screens at some point but I think an actual link is much better.

Both these guys have a crush on the hot chick that lives with them. They spend hours crumbling up 100s of pounds of newspapers and fill her room with them. Pretty sure neither got lucky from the prank though.
